The short version
Silicone toy: use water-based. Glass, steel or ABS: anything works. Latex condoms: water-based or silicone, never oil. Porous materials: water-based, and consider a condom over the product.
Sensitive skin
Look for glycerin-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free formulas with a shorter ingredient list. Patch-test on your inner arm if you react easily to new products.
Flavoured and warming formulas
Flavoured lubricants usually contain sweeteners, and warming formulas rely on ingredients that some people find irritating. They're fine for many people — just start small.
